Kopi Luwak – probably the most expensive coffee in the world – is for connoisseurs worth to pay 50 € the cup. The “production” is exclusive to the coffee. The coffee beans are won from the excrements of Asian palm civet – also called toddy cat in Indonesia. The small predators eat everything, but also red coffee cherries. The pulp is digested, the beans are fermented by enzymes and then excreted without damage. Accordingly, the quality of this coffee will vary depending on the type of coffee beans the civet has eaten, how long the excrements lie and where they are found. The beans are then washed and roasted at over 170 degrees.

The collection of excreted beans from wild animals is, of course, time-consuming. Some producers therefore catch the animals and lock them into small cages – similar to chickens in Germany years ago and forbitten today. There the civets are fed only coffee beans.
