Sustainable Straws – Find the right one for you

Sustainable Straws – Find the right one for you

The iced coffee season is starting.

Spring is finally here! Time to equip yourself for the first iced coffee. A must have: the right sustainable straws. In Germany about 40 billion plastic straws are consumed per year. Time to reorientate. Conventional plastic is produced from petroleum and contains harmful substances. Before giving you an overview of great alternatives, lets start with …

The History

  • The first known drinking straws were made by the Sumerians to drink beer. Presumably, the solid by-products of fermentation, which sink to the bottom, should be avoided.
  • The oldest surviving straw was found in a Sumerian tomb dating back to 3000 BC. It consists of a gold tube with a sunken lapis lazuli.
  • In Argentina and neighboring countries, similar metallic sieve straws (Bombilla) were used for mate tea.
  • In the 1800s, straws from ryegrass became fashionable as they were cheap.
  • As they soften when drinking, Marvin C. Stein developed the modern drinking straw made of paper in 1888.

🥤 Straws

Today, there are straws made of all kinds of materials. As BPA plastic is really not an option, here is a brief overview of sustainable straws made from different materials, including buying tips.

My conclusion: At home, I think bamboo, stainless steel or glass is best, because you can use it again and again and thus less waste is created. The most durable are metal drinking straws. You can also use them for the next Moscow Mule 😉
