AD – COOPERATION – COMPETITION

First of its kind

I think it’s great to be up close with new projects, especially when the final product is convincing and there is an exciting story to tell. Camping Coffee is exactly that. But let’s start from the beginning.

How it all started …

I’ve known Julio for 3 years. We met at the Berlin School of Coffee at the Berlin Coffee Festival in 2017. At the time, I wanted to open a coffee shop with coffee preparation and recipes from all over the world. Julio offered me to create and roast my own Bunaa Signature Coffee. I thought that was a great idea. Two years later, Julio is still working at Touton, a specialty green coffee importer. He has a customer from Serbia visiting. While they having a walk through Hamburg they were passing Le Vélo, a shop that restores bicycles between 1880 and 1950 by hand, owned by Bosnian Senad. Julio knows Senad and knows he has good coffee from a Hamburg roastery. So they decide to go inside to have a chat among compatriots with a good cup of coffee. But why doesn’t Senad have his own brand of coffee?

It took Julio a year before he left Touton and made his first coffee cupping with Senad to create his very own signature coffee. Senad wants to have classic espresso in a modern way he wants to call “Camping Coffee”. So Julio brings 10 coffees to choose from for Senads first coffee cupping. In the end, an incredibly delicious coffee blend is the result:

The Coffee

  • 50% farm coffee from Brazil, hand-picked, natural processed, Arabica varieties: Mundo Nuevo, Catuai and Caturra
  • 30% Indian Parchment Canephora (Robusta), washed
  • 20% Kenyan peaberry, washed, Arabica varieties: SL21 and SL34

So that the Robusta from India does not dominate the coffee, Julio had all the beans roasted together (pre-blend) – so the beans stay a little lighter.

The coffee comes in a turquoise-colored packaging with a zipper and aroma valve and all information about the origin and taste profile of the coffee: milk chocolate, cocoa nibs, cherries, velvety with the sweetness of marshmallows and longlasting.

I was thrilled to try the coffee: A little taste bomb, not too dark, not too fruity for an espresso and still strong enough if you mix with milk.
